Excerpt: Pigments and People

A magnificent blue stone is mined from the quarry in Afghanistan or Siberia. It has striations of yellow pyrite and white calcite embedded in it. The stone is beautiful, expensive, and semi-precious. It is lapis lazuli, an ideal blue that painters crave. They want the color so much that they will grind up the hard stone to tiny granules wrapped in cloth and go through hours of soaking and kneading these remnants till the blue has seeped out from the stone into a lye solution, where the pigment finally falls to the bottom of the pot. Afterwards they’ll knead the stone a second and even a third time for a lighter shade. The majestic color was given the ultimate name a shade of blue could receive, ultramarine. It was used for centuries and it is unknown when the pigment was first used. The status of the color ultramarine still burns holes in painters’ pockets nowadays.

Quiet Chocolate Encounter

She saw the green and peach colors against the white of the paper. A hand had left a green wrapped chocolate on the fold of her textbook. She looked up. Her voice, hoarse and quiet from dozing and disuse after hours in the library, automatically said "Thanks." The person, in blue pants and a strange velvet green jacket, hadn't stopped, but turned and gave a distracted sort of smile as they slipped their hand back into their pocket and continued to walk across the room. She wasn't sure what she should do, but she was finishing up her reading anyway. She read the last pages and unsure if the person would be there, unsure if she wanted the person to still be there, she walked to the exit that they would have used. She continued walking through the hall glancing through the glass as she passed by. There they were. They noticed her and she noticed them. She held up the candy looking a bit confused, waiting for an explanation, moving closer to the glass. They made an open hand gesture that seemed also to ask the same thing, spreading his palms up and moving his arms apart. She read that as "Why? Well, why not?" So she gave a thumbs up and a smile, he nodded, and she turned. She walked to the elevator. The chocolate was sweet.
